A Tale of Two Tea Parties

From my column at CAIVN : First there was a "Tea Party" whose members said they did not care about party, but principle. They railed against corporate America's tax-funded bailouts, they demanded more transparency at the highest levels of government, and they stuck up for the little guy against the establishment. Though predominately composed of "right-leaning" Americans (whatever that means), their anger at a shady, secretive, corporate establishment should have made even Michael Moore proud. Indeed, they echoed the very themes of President Barack Obama's campaign- change, transparency, reform, accountability. In 2009 something truly amazing seemed to be happening in America- an army of white, middle-class, middle-age Americans were actually raging against "the machine"! When it came down to it, they proved their earnestness and "principle-before-party" politics in the NY-23 special election by opposing the Republican candidate for not ...

Can Grassroots Libertarians Actually Defeat the Leviathan in DC?

Yes we can! Reminds me of a Banksy piece. Hat tip: Bonnie Kristian, Young Americans for Liberty

Libertarianism and Corporations

On last week's post about the Supreme Court 's decision to strike down campaign-finance laws like McCain-Feingold, the discussion centered on the nature of a corporation and whether a libertarian could support its existence. I'll say truthfully that I'm not entirely sure what I think about this issue and have some reading up / thinking to do. I would absolutely like to explore it some more and determine what I believe with more certainty. For this purpose, I'm re-posting a comment I left and would love to hear your thoughts and arguments. Links to other good resources on this issue are certainly welcome too: As for the origin of corporations, I don't see why as a matter of voluntary cooperation and by means of contractual agreements made on a free market, individuals could not pool together their savings to provide capital for a business, voluntarily agree to rules governing risk and liability in the event of bankruptcy, and appoint managers to run the business-...

Cain and Nimrod: The Profane Beginnings of the Modern State

Here is some interesting reading for Christian libertarians over at Using My Liberty : I grew up in an evangelical home that equated patriotism with godliness. I was told that God gave man human government and although not perfect, it is worthy of respect and submission as unto God. But let's take a closer look into biblical history to see if that's really accurate. Read the article here .

Kill Your TV

Anti-TV Merchandise The following is a fantastic lecture on the "cognitive surplus" most citizens of first world nations enjoy today as a result of our super-abundance of free time (thanks to the explosive prosperity of the Industrial Revolution). The thesis is that we have panicked for nearly a century now with all that free time and spent it downing gin and watching countless hours of television. Just imagine the possibilities if our "cognitive surplus" were harnessed and used for the sake of our enlightenment and liberty! Enjoy! (and Hat Tip: Bonnie Kristian, YAL )

Humble Libertarian Comments of the Week

On Airport Security and Guns: Alexander James Fremont said... Don't take the guns off the plane, put more guns on the plane into the hands of active duty and reservist military serviceman and off-duty police officers and give other passengers bats so that a terrorist wouldn't think twice about hitting a plane. I don't have actual facts on this, but I suspect NRA conventions are the safest places to be (I wouldn't do anything unsafe with a gun with other loaded weapons around). January 19, 2010 7:54 PM On Glenn Beck: Daryl said... My friend put it best, "He has my granny listening to and agreeing with libertarian views." So I will take the good he offers, but that doesn't mean I like everything about him. January 17, 2010 9:33 PM Norman Horn said... I'm neutral on Beck, I don't really care but I'm glad that some people may find out about libertarianism because of his antics. Meh. ;-) January 19, 2010 1:15 PM On Scott Brown: Rati...
