Humble Libertarian Comments of the Week

On Airport Security and Guns:

Don't take the guns off the plane, put more guns on the plane into the hands of active duty and reservist military serviceman and off-duty police officers and give other passengers bats so that a terrorist wouldn't think twice about hitting a plane. I don't have actual facts on this, but I suspect NRA conventions are the safest places to be (I wouldn't do anything unsafe with a gun with other loaded weapons around).

On Glenn Beck:

My friend put it best, "He has my granny listening to and agreeing with libertarian views." So I will take the good he offers, but that doesn't mean I like everything about him.

I'm neutral on Beck, I don't really care but I'm glad that some people may find out about libertarianism because of his antics. Meh. ;-)

On Scott Brown:

Your points are well made. However, the thought of C(r)oakley as senator is as revolting as Ted Kennedy was when he was in office.

I have issues's with Scott Brown's philosophy of governance, however I voted for him as I do not want C(r)oakley in Washington.

Compromise is the decision to select the lessor of two evils because to do otherwise will insure the election to office the greater of two evils.

As Kennedy had about as much of a chance as a snowball in hell I voted Brown.

The good people of Massachusetts told pollster after pollster that they wanted to send a message to Washington. My! My! That message has been received loud and clear:

"WE'RE NOT PAYING ATTENTION!"

Congratulations, Massachusetts!

In the past I have felt a slant too far to the right coming from you, I see that I have misread your statements and I am glad to see an emphasis on what is important: libertarianism over authoritarianism. It is not just what is left and right, but what is up our business and down to earth that is also (perhaps more) important.

Wes, and I say this with the deepest respect, it's not that you're the "only sane Libertarian Left." It's more that you're simply a sane person who also happens to be a Left Libertarian.

There's a huge difference between us Right Libertarians and Left Libertarians like you and Tom Knapp, Radley Balko, ect... We supported Bush because we vehemently supported the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and see it as a Libertarian issue: fighting Islamo-Fascism. Left Libertarians don't care a wit for the fight against Islamo-Fascism, and are, at heart isolationists.

Aw Wes great article. Having only watched the mainstream media and Fox news I was ready to celibrate. Now you took the wind out of my sails. Though I must say losing his seat in just a few months to a Republican Teddy must have spun a few times in his grave tonight.

Wes you definitely need more national exposure. How you have time for your research, write a great blog and be a full time student is beyond me. When I was a student I wasted my free time on my 70 Mustang, high school sweeheart, and reading the National Lampoon. I even got banned from the campus library for laughing too hard at the Lampoon out loud. Your on your way to great things, mark my words.

My 2011 Trip

Hey Patriots! Hope your New Year is off to a good start! I am multitasking my head off to prepare for a trip around the country of indefinite length and scope starting next week. I'll be headed for Colorado first where I'll investigate medical cannabis laws and their effects; then I'll be flying out to Washington DC for the month of February to attend CPAC and ISFLC; and after that I'll move north to New Hampshire to spend March hanging with members of the Free State Project and learning more about it. I'm not positive what's next after that, but I've got a general inkling, and it might involve venturing overseas to learn a little more about the broader world around us and relay everything I see to you readers here at The Humble Libertarian ! Wish me luck and keep your eye out for updates as I travel. Peace, Wes Wes Messamore , Editor in Chief, T H L Articles | Author's Page

Occupy Mordor or Destroy the Ring?

There has been mixed responses to Occupy Wall Street by libertarians. Some see the movement as a positive, while others see them as little more than lazy hipsters. But libertarians must be sensitive to why people feel the way they do about issues. The occupiers point out a legitimate concern that "the 1%" control vastly more power and wealth than "the 99%", and corporations have accumulated more power and privilege than is healthy for an open society. Some other concerns and demands are absurd, but the heart of the matter is on track. The question is why has this happened? While many on the left are quick to blame a nebulous thing called "greed", or lack of regulation, the matter is more complicated than that. This calls for a Lord of the Rings metaphor. Let's say that Sauron, the big cheese bad guy of Lord of the Rings, is the corporate hegemony. The 1%. Most people in Middle Earth agree that this is a problem, but there are a few differ...
