Chilling: This is the view from an NSA spy's desk as they monitor your metadata

To show just how creepy and invasive the NSA's spying is, German Green party politician Malte Spitz sued to have a German telecom giant hand over six months of his phone data, which he made available to a German newspaper, Zeit Online. Zeit then put together a presentation showing just what the NSA is watching when it watches your use of your phone.

Hit play on the chilling presentation and you'll see a little target begin to move around a map of Germany as Spitz's GPS data is relayed and stored. You'll see a little phone icon appear next to the target every time he makes a phone call. A little box below the map displays the date and time of day as they tick by. To the right of the map, every time a new day begins, an overview of Spitz's metadata appears with the number of incoming and outgoing phone calls, the total time spent on the phone, the number of incoming and outgoing SMS text messages, and the duration of phone connection to the Internet. It will sometimes also display a link to Spitz's tweets that can be cross-referenced with the rest of the data to help spies build a clearer picture.

You know that uneasy feeling you get when a police car drives by even if you're doing absolutely nothing wrong and breaking no law? That feeling of vulnerability before the awesome might of someone with a gun, a badge, and the power structure behind their every action, whether right or wrong, just or unjust, benevolent or corrupt, even legal or illegal? (and if you don't think police break laws-- lolol)

Yeah, watch this presentation and know that the equivalent of that police car driving by is happening to you all day every day, courtesy of your Washington national security state. And it is illegal, so there's one rule the cops have been breaking on a massive scale (can we all just admit no one takes the Constitution seriously anymore, and it's a real Game of Thrones situation in this country right now? and has been since at least the Whiskey Rebellion?).

And remember this is just what we've caught them doing, which they've been doing in secret for sometime. Who knows what else they're doing or willing to do or going to do once you forget about all this or another freaking terrorist group, encouraged by the massive success they've had in disrupting our life, strikes?

And remember your smart device doesn't just have a GPS and a text messaging app. It's got a microphone, video camera, and a gyroscope that knows when you stand up, or sit down, when you're walking, and when you're jogging.

You better not shout, you better not pout, you better not cry, I'm telling you why-- the NSA is watching you.

Occupy Mordor or Destroy the Ring?

There has been mixed responses to Occupy Wall Street by libertarians. Some see the movement as a positive, while others see them as little more than lazy hipsters. But libertarians must be sensitive to why people feel the way they do about issues. The occupiers point out a legitimate concern that "the 1%" control vastly more power and wealth than "the 99%", and corporations have accumulated more power and privilege than is healthy for an open society. Some other concerns and demands are absurd, but the heart of the matter is on track. The question is why has this happened? While many on the left are quick to blame a nebulous thing called "greed", or lack of regulation, the matter is more complicated than that. This calls for a Lord of the Rings metaphor. Let's say that Sauron, the big cheese bad guy of Lord of the Rings, is the corporate hegemony. The 1%. Most people in Middle Earth agree that this is a problem, but there are a few differ...
