The Hypocritical, Grandstanding Democrats

The Democrats in Washington have made such a stink about Republican opposition to raising the debt ceiling, with many going so far as to accuse the Tea Party caucus of behaving like terrorists. Terrorists! Republicans are willing to cause any kind of harm to the economy, the Democrats say, if it will benefit them politically.

But who's really doing the political grandstanding over the debt limit? Could it be the same party whose entire Senate caucus voted against raising the debt limit in 2006? Could it be them? Could it be the party whose Senate majority leader made the following statements in an impassioned speech in 2006?

"Most Americans know that increasing debt is the last thing we should be doing."

"Economists will tell you we should be reducing debt, not increasing it."

"We're being asked to do what shouldn't be asked of us, to increase the debt to almost $9 trillion."

(And seriously visit that link and watch the whole speech. He sounds like the biggest tea bagging "terrorist" that ever lived.) Again I ask, who is doing the grandstanding? Who is seeking to politicize fiscal policy into a partisan kabuki theater? Could it be the party that had six senators in 2009, who even under a president of the same party, insisted on opposing any debt limit increase that did not come with spending cuts attached?

Could it be the party that said and did all these things in the last five years and yet tells Americans today that without raising the debt ceiling, our economy will be in mortal danger? That indeed they are "trying to save life on this planet as we know it today," from Republicans who don't want to raise the debt ceiling?

Could it be that party? Yeah. It's that party. It's the Democratic Party. So sorry to disappoint you. I guess we're just all terrorists now.

Occupy Mordor or Destroy the Ring?

There has been mixed responses to Occupy Wall Street by libertarians. Some see the movement as a positive, while others see them as little more than lazy hipsters. But libertarians must be sensitive to why people feel the way they do about issues. The occupiers point out a legitimate concern that "the 1%" control vastly more power and wealth than "the 99%", and corporations have accumulated more power and privilege than is healthy for an open society. Some other concerns and demands are absurd, but the heart of the matter is on track. The question is why has this happened? While many on the left are quick to blame a nebulous thing called "greed", or lack of regulation, the matter is more complicated than that. This calls for a Lord of the Rings metaphor. Let's say that Sauron, the big cheese bad guy of Lord of the Rings, is the corporate hegemony. The 1%. Most people in Middle Earth agree that this is a problem, but there are a few differ...
