ABC News reports:The United States Department of Justice has green-lighted the prosecution of former presidential candidate John Edwards for alleged violations of campaign laws while he tried to cover up an extra-marital affair, ABC News has learned.
A source close to the case said Edwards is aware that the government intends to seek an indictment and that the former senator from North Carolina is now considering his limited options. He could accept a plea bargain with prosecutors or face a potentially costly trial.
Edwards has been the focus of a lengthy federal investigation focusing on hundreds of thousands of dollars allegedly provided by two wealthy supporters. The government will contend those were illegal donations that ultimately went to support and seclude his mistress, Rielle Hunter.

Just stop and consider that John Edwards could have been Vice President of the United States. If anything were to happen to John Kerry in that alternate universe, or if Edwards, a pretty young guy as far as politicians go, were to run with the Vice President's "incumbent" advantage after Kerry served out his terms, John Edwards could have been President of the United States.
These are the kind of corrupt people that run Washington. People like John Edwards (a former U.S. Senator from North Carolina) are voting on the Patriot Act extension this week. People like John Edwards run for President and Vice President. John Edwards is a man who cheated on his wife while she was dying from cancer, and allegedly used campaign funds to cover it up... and who could have been President of the United States.
When Michelle Malkin says "Culture of Corruption," she means people like John Edwards. I just wonder what would have happened to this investigation if he had actually won in 2004 and were Vice President right now. It's a revolting thought.
