Just fire back that many recent presidents and candidates on presidential tickets were relatively obscure governors like Bill Clinton, Sarah Palin, and Jimmy Carter. They often do well because they are outsiders to DC, have executive experience, and without the name recognition, are less polarizing than other figures might be.
