No, this is not the Onion. It's the Associated Press. And they're reporting that a junior high school teacher in Buncombe County, North Carolina is bullying a poor young girl. From literally throwing her pencil box into the school hallway, to actually calling her a "loser" multiple times on her assignments- this government bureaucrat is out of control.
If this were a private school, you better believe that there would be a strong incentive to take care of the matter quickly. Instead of battling with an aloof school district, the mother would ultimately have the power to take her daughter out of the school and put her in one with a reputation for nurturing and encouraging young minds, instead of deriving satisfaction from cutting them down.
Instead, she cannot do this without incurring a built-in tax penalty from the state, which will force her to pay this vicious teacher's salary whether she likes his services or not. This is the coercion inherent in a system that should be the most free of all- education.
