Tennessee Grassroots Activism Roundup

I typically feature U.S. and global news here at The Humble Libertarian, but I did want to do a brief roundup today as a Nashville resident of some things that my Tennessean readers can do to stay involved in the cause for liberty.

1. Urge Tennessee's Senators to Audit the Fed

Congressman Ron Paul's bill to Audit the Fed is a landmark piece of legislation that will give Americans the knowledge we deserve about where all those trillions of dollars in loans (of our money) have gone.

Sadly both of Tennessee's supposedly Republican Senators oppose the Senate version of that bill, The Federal Reserve Sunshine Act of 2009. This is particularly sad, because Tennessee is the great state of Andrew Jackson.

President Jackson, if you'll remember, was vehemently opposed to the very existence of the central bank in his time, and worked hard to shut it down entirely, which makes his appearance on the $20 note of the central bank's present incarnation, the Federal Reserve, extremely ironic.

Indeed, Jackson said of central banking:

"The bold effort the present (central) bank had made to control the government ... are but premonitions of the fate that await the American people should they be deluded into a perpetuation of this institution or the establishment of another like it."

Prophetic, isn't it? Contrast that level of courage and understanding with Senator Alexander's statement:

"The audit? It’s a bad idea. It’s a sorry day when the Congress superimposes itself on the Fed, nosing around in monetary policy. It’s bad enough we are nosing around with the car companies."

Please contact Lamar Alexander and let him know you disagree: +1.202.224.4944. Tennessee's other Senator, Bob Corker also goes on record as one of the Senate's most vocal opponents of an audit.

Please also contact Mr. Corker and let him know that he should join all 177 of his Republican colleagues in the House by co-sponsoring the Senate version of Audit the Fed: +1.202.224.3344.

2. Oppose Tennessee's Nashville Convention Center

The debate is heating up over a proposed one billion dollar convention center and accompanying three hundred million dollar hotel. Chances look more and more like these will be publicly funded with Tennessee residents' tax dollars.

Instead of using state surpluses to lower taxes and drive economic growth by putting money back in our hands, the State of Tennessee and City of Nashville are poised to undertake a massive, wasteful spending project.

The economic (il)logic of driving growth by drying up productive capital to fund pet projects never ceases to astound me.

Barack Obama Tattoos

With Barack Obama's approval ratings still at a solid 62%, I became suddenly curious to know how popular the 44th U.S. President really is. Are people so enamoured with President Obama that I could do a quick Google search and turn up some photos of people with permanent tattoos of Obama inked into their very skin? Oh yeah. It's that bad. Below are ten examples of Barack Obama tattoos (some decent, some pretty awful). PS: As a control, I decided to Google "bush tattoos." I found only two examples in the first couple pages, and they were decidedly anti-Bush. I also learned to never, ever Google "bush tattoos" again. Seriously. Don't. Legal Marijuana On The Michigan Ballot for 2018

A Michigan ballot initiative to legalize recreational marijuana received enough valid signatures to qualify for a vote in November. When the required number of ballot signatures was certified by the State Board of Canvassers, the 4-0 decision of the board was met by cheers from supporters of the initiative who were present, the Detroit Free Press reports . Rick Thompson, a board member of the Michigan National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML), put this ballot initiative in perspective as a matter of the State of Michigan safeguarding its own sovereignty and protecting its own citizens from an intrusive federal policy: "The people of Michigan deserve this. They earned it. We've faced many trials and tribulations. We've had so many stop and go signs from the federal government. That's why states have to take the reins on the issue and really be the crucibles of democracy that they've always been intended to be." Indeed the last time ...

What I did on the ten year anniversary of 9-11

During my brief trip to Korea, on the ten year anniversary of 9-11, I did exactly what the terrorists didn't want me to do: I lived without anxiety. I lived without regrets. I lived without fear. I let nothing intimidate me. I let my soul be still. I laughed with my friends. I tried something new. I marveled at nature. I sang at the top of my lungs... badly. My heart was at ease, because I spent all day knowing that for me, this day and every one that preceded it for the last decade was not about the terrorists, but about loving my life, the world I live it in, and the people with whom I am so lucky to share this world. The best memorial I could offer for so many thousands murdered ten years ago, was to ignore their murderers, live without terror in my heart, and in its place let blossom joy.
