By: Heidi Moseley, THL ContributorHillary Clinton and other modern liberals have decided they no longer want to be called "liberals." We have finally won a war of words with the left. We have made “liberal” a dirty word. Instead there has been a shift to be called Progressives. I personally think Progressive is a much better and more accurate term for the left.
Liberal is what at one time described John Locke, Thomas Jefferson and Adam Smith. Classical liberals believed in private property rights, individual freedoms and responsibilities, and free markets. These great thinkers are on the opposite side of the political spectrum from Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton and Barack Hussein Obama. But who are the Progressives?
Wikipedia describes progressivism as a “political and social term that refers to ideologies and movements favoring or advocating changes or reform, usually in a statist or egalitarian direction for economic policies (government management) and liberal direction for social policies (personal choice). Progressivism is often viewed in opposition to conservative ideologies.” I’d like to take this post to introduce you to one Progressive in particular: Margaret Sanger.
In a discussion with Congressman Fortenberry earlier this year, Hillary Clinton tried to defend her statement[1] about her admiration of Progressive Margaret Sanger– founder of Planned Parenthood: “I admire Thomas Jefferson. I admire his words and his leadership. And I deplore his unrepentant slave holding. I admire Margaret Sanger, being a pioneer and trying to empower women to have some control over their bodies. And I deplore statements that you have referenced. That is the way we often are when we look at flawed human beings. There are things that we admire and things that we deplore.”
"The most merciful thing that a large family does to one of its infant members is to kill it," Margaret Sanger wrote in Women and the New Race (Sanger, p. 63). Most people recognize Planned Parenthood for their birth-control and abortions. But they don’t know much about the diabolical strivings of the Progressives like Sanger who truly believed that population control, especially of the "undesirable" populations, through forced abortions, forced sterilization, and education would develop humanity into a better, more just society.
Referring to immigrants and Catholics she noted in her book, Pivot of Civilization, "[They're] an unceasingly spawning class of human beings who never should have been born at all." (Sanger, p.187) Progressives envisioned a social order in which the state completely controlled every facet of the individual’s life including who had children and who was not allowed to “breed.” The Progressives still strive for a command and control society where they have ultimate power and make all of our decisions, but they first had to re-educate us to make their agenda more palatable.
Birth control is acceptable to all walks of life. Abortion is no longer taboo to most through the legalization and mainstreaming of the procedure. Progressives now have wormed their way into the environmental movement. Population control, especially in the third-world (Africans, Asians and Latinos), is becoming tolerable thanks to the Green Movement. What we don’t realize is that these ideas are playing right into the hands of the Progressive Movement.

1. “I admire Margaret Sanger enormously, her courage, her tenacity, her vision … And when I think about what she did all those years ago in Brooklyn, taking on archetypes, taking on attitudes and accusations flowing from all directions, I am really in awe of her.” ~Hillary Clinton accepting the Margaret Sanger Award from Planned Parenthood on March 27, 2009.
