Excellent foreign policy piece by Michael Scheuer. The death of nearly 100 people — reportedly mostly women and children — over the weekend is a salutary reminder of an eternal truth which Western leaders seem unfamiliar: PEOPLE GET KILLED IN WARS. In the present Syrian case, both sides in the ongoing Syrian civil war appear to share responsibility for the deaths. And while the trigger pullers on each side bear responsibility, the line of responsibility also leads directly back to Britain’s David Cameron, the UN’s leaders, John McCain, Lindsey Graham, Barack Obama, and especially Hillary Clinton and Susan Rice. These interventionists have led an effective effort to prevent the legitimate Syrian regime from restoring order to the country, and have encouraged Syrian dissidents to provide the cannon fodder for what has become a face-off between Asaad’s army and Islamist militants aided by al-Qaeda and armed and funded by the Jordanians, Turks, Saudis, and other of the Gulf’s tyrant...

“If I were empress of the Universe I would insist on every individual having a unique ID permanently attached – a barcode if you will; an implanted chip to provide an easy, fast inexpensive way to identify individuals,” Moon told BBC Future. “It would be imprinted on everyone at birth. Point the scanner at someone and there it is,” she said, adding that the elimination of anonymity would enable people to be identified in both combat and non-combat operations. Moon’s proposal sounds like something out of Nazi concentration camps, where prisoners were tattooed with five digit Hollerith numbers to identify them using a punch card system developed by IBM. However, science fiction writer Moon is not merely a global warming alarmist, she is also a Malthusian population control advocate. The good news is that violent crimes are at a 39-year low. The bad news is that spending on law enforcement remains at $100 billion a year. Compared with social welfare spending and the Defense Department budget, this is small change. But shouldn’t lower rates of violent crime produce small police departments? No. Why not? Because tax spending on crime is never cut. The law enforcement system is a bureaucracy. The law of bureaucracy says that spending is never cut. It’s a ratchet. (It’s also a racket.) So, crime gets re-defined. New crimes are added to the old list, so that there will be a constant rate of spending, minimum, and maybe rising. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is inviting public comments on its new rule regarding shotguns. It plans to ban them. There will be a ban on imports. (Note: watch prices rise on those already in the USA.) The basis of this ban will be the guns’ semi-automatic status. It the magazine has more than five rounds, the weapon will be banned. Why? It's Memorial Day weekend and all across America there are flag waving parades and events honoring our soldiers for their service to our country. They've paid a horrific price in terms of lives lost and debilitating injuries....For what? A foreign policy of perpetual war by a nation that should change its name to Murder, Inc. is far more descriptive of an insideous and evil empire in decline than a free and prosperous nation. For the young men who join the military in the false belief that they are serving their country, those who return from neocon wars minus their junk and limbs, and with other horrific injuries, must be asking themselves "Why did I do it?" and "Did I sacrifice my manhood and limbs for defense contractor profits?". Modelled on US covert ops in Central America, the Pentagon's "Salvador Option for Iraq" initiated in 2004 was carried out under the helm of the US Ambassador to Iraq John Negroponte (2004-2005) together with Robert Stephen Ford, who was appointed US Ambassador to Syria in January 2011, less than two months before the beginning of the armed insurgency directed against the government of Bashar Al Assad. "The Salvador Option" is a "terrorist model" of mass killings by US sponsored death squads. It was first applied in El Salvador, in the heyday of resistance against the military dictatorship, resulting in an estimated 75,000 deaths.
